Before it became a tranquil retreat for travellers, 58 Hume Road was something far more intimate: a family sanctuary, a shared home, and the quiet centre of a life lived across generations.
In 2000, when Michelle first walked through the gates of the old Dunkeld property, she wasn’t looking for a guesthouse. She was searching for a place spacious enough to bring her family together, a rare find in the heart of Johannesburg. At the time, the family lived in separate homes; holidays meant coordinating pet-sitting, house-minding, and travel between households.
This new space offered a solution wrapped in possibility: three generations, each with their own home, all living on one piece of land.
A calendar went up on the wall, a gentle symbol of the overlapping rhythms of family life. Pets were cared for collectively, meals were shared between garden paths, and offices slowly migrated onto the property. Over the years, 58 Hume Road became more than a home. It became a living ecosystem; warm, lively, and wonderfully human.
But time, as it does, shifted the shape of things.
The grandparents passed.
The parents retired to the Garden Route.
One sister married and began her own chapter elsewhere.
And the once-bustling property grew quiet, until Michelle remained as its final keeper.
Maintaining such a large, memory-filled home alone was daunting but letting it go wasn’t an option. Instead, Michelle chose transformation over loss. In 2017, she opened two guest rooms, inviting travellers to experience the peace, comfort, and understated charm that had lived here for years.
What began as a practical step soon became a calling.
Today, 58 On Hume is a ten-room boutique stay shaped by intention, warmth, and lived history. It is still, at its heart, a home just one shared with the world.
A Boutique Stay Rooted in Heart

It’s in the quiet elegance of each room.
It’s in the fresh flowers placed with care.
It’s in the handwritten notes, the curated textures, the calm of the garden at first light.
Hospitality here isn’t scripted.
It’s intuitive. Considered. Human.
This isn’t a hotel.
It’s a haven, intimate, warm, and quietly luxurious.
A Place of Peace
Two rescue dogs and two cats call the property home, their gentle presence adding warmth to the experience. For their comfort, 58 On Hume remains exclusive to resident animals only, a choice guided by harmony and respect for both guests and pets.
The garden is a favourite place for slow mornings.
The rooms are designed for exhaling.
The atmosphere encourages rest. The kind you feel in your shoulders, your breath, your pace.
